Between my shadow and my soul

Wading

Halfway to the shore
the current kicks up,
sea water drenches my nostrils
and I give up.
We cannot fight what is
Not in our control, the
Tide has spoken

But within the swell of that tide we must remember the things we first learned, don't close your eyes, you may miss a ray of hope, don't stop breathing, you may surface yet.

Stevie Smith - Not Waving But Drowning

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

Ah shukran. Words comfort so well. They are a healing poultice for jaded eyes
